5 summer fashion basics that will always be in style

Fashion has many faces. And when it comes to the everyday fashion that many of us love, there are actually two main ideologies or subcultures that dictate the clothing habits of most – at least in my humble opinion.

These two very different (and seemingly opposite) fashion personalities are: First, there is the subculture that is all about staying on trend. This is the side of fashion that ebbs and flows, eagerly coming up with new outfit ideas, fashion “rules,” and aesthetics almost weekly. And then there is the side of fashion that is constant. The site that prides itself on its timelessness – never over the top, always chic.

While it’s fun to explore different styles and trends, try out the different aesthetics popping up on TikTok, or copy the “it girls'” latest favorite outfits, there’s also something completely grown-up, satisfying, and reassuring about being you can base your wardrobe on the classics.

5 summer fashion basics that will always be in style

As we head into summer, it’s easy to get swept up in the tide of the latest trend, but that option doesn’t always seem realistic for everyone’s budget (or sanity). If you’re instead looking to complement your summer wardrobe in a more intentional way that creates less clutter, then adopting a capsule wardrobe mentality is the way to go. In other words, if you consciously decide to strategically build a wardrobe that consists of timeless, high-quality pieces that are not only always in style, but also go well together, you can combine countless outfits with little effort.

If you’re nodding your head emphatically right now, “That’s it!” This is the summer when I buy timeless, high-quality pieces!” – you’ve come to the right place. Read on for 5 summer wardrobe staples that will always be in style.

1. Denim shorts

When I think of summer, denim shorts immediately come to mind. I firmly believe that jeans will always be a staple of everyday fashion and that the same goes for shorter styles in the warmer months. While “on-trend” silhouettes, rinses and lengths fluctuate, a basic pair with a medium rinse and a length that’s not too short and not too long will almost certainly prevail in the changing trends.

2. A white tank top

Sounds super easy? Good! It should. It’s easy to fill your shopping cart with over-the-top, expensive, and trend-driven items (believe me, I speak from experience), but the fact is, sometimes the best shopping decision you can make is one that’s so simple is almost painful. White tank tops are both the epitome of timelessness and the definition of versatility. Combine it with shorts, a skirt, a tennis skort, jeans, under a blazer or a cardigan – the sky is the limit.

3. Linen pants

For some of us, the warmer months mean daily battles with our sweat demons. (As a Central New York resident whose house is covered in snow and frost for much of the year, I know the struggle.) Cue linen pants. Not only do they scream “summer,” but they’re also lightweight and incredibly comfortable. Grab a tailored pair if you spend a lot of time at the office, or a casual drawstring pair for trips to the beach or morning walks.

4. Neutral sandals

If you’re investing in building a capsule wardrobe, you definitely need a pair of neutral sandals. They literally go with everything. Literally (I say it in my Chris Traeger voice). When choosing a style, choose one (or two) that best suits your lifestyle. Heeled sandals are great for the office or happy hour, while a flat pair of mules is a more practical option for heading to the park, the beach, or the farmers market.

5. A swimsuit you'll love wearing

Of course, you should love and appreciate your body at all stages of life, but I also know that sometimes that’s easier said than done – and that an ill-fitting swimsuit really doesn’t help (I was a swimmer in high school and still am Flashbacks to this). the skin-tight suits and silicone caps).

Finding the “perfect” swimsuit is different for everyone, depending on your body shape and personal preferences. The search may not be easy, but it is worth it. If you are lookingIf you’re looking for a timeless suit, look for classic colors and silhouettes. Black swimsuits will always be flattering and chic, and vintage silhouettes, like a belted one-piece, have a long lifespan.
